FRIDAY UPDATE!
MANILA, Philippines – Purefoods survived Red Bull’s big fourth quarter run, getting the key baskets from its two superstars in an 80-72 win, its fifth in 10 games in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
James Yap and Kerby Raymundo each knocked in a triple in the last 2:35 and the Giants forced the Bulls to three straight turnovers in the final two minutes to pull off the victory despite missing the services of PJ Simon and Roger Yap on injuries.
Yap finished with 28 points including 15 in the three-point area and had six rebounds while Raymundo wound up with 14 points as Purefoods overcame the loss of an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter when Red Bull unleashed a 13-0 run.
“At this point, the focus of our dynamic duo is helping us win every night," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.
Red Bull suffered its third straight defeat and joined idle teams Coca-Cola and Ginebra at the bottom of the 10-team standings.
The win also gave the Giants a sweep over the Bulls in their elimination round duel. Purefoods won their first encounter, 77-73.
Purefoods held Red Bull to only nine points in the first quarter and took a 66-55 lead entering the final 7:38 of the fourth quarter on a three-point play from former Bull Rich Alvarez.
But the Bulls unloaded their ferocious running game, scoring 13 quick unanswered points to grab the lead 68-66 with 4:14 remaining in the game.
But Raymundo had a basket, and after Gabby Espinas twinner gave Red Bull its last taste of the lead (70-68), James Yap drained a triple and Purefoods never looked back. – GMANews.TV
